First Child Open-Heart Surgery Successfully Done in Basra

(ITALPRESS) In a major milestone for Iraq’s healthcare sector, the first paediatric open-heart cardiac surgery has been successfully performed at Al-Sayyab University Hospital in Basra. A 7-year-old girl suffering from severe right ventricular outflow tract stenosis— a serious heart condition where blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs is restricted— underwent the complex procedure.

The operation was made possible thanks to an international healthcare cooperation project jointly coordinated by the Basra Department of Health, led by Abbas Altamimi, with direct support from Governor Assad Aleidani. It was then implemented in partnership with the Italy-based GKSD Group, chaired by Kamel Ghribi, who also serves as Chairman of GSD Healthcare, President of the GKSD Group, and Vice President of Gruppo San Donato.

Led by Professor Tammam Youssef and carried out with the participation of the local medical team, the procedure took place in operating rooms and intensive care units equipped with advanced technology, marking the beginning of a programme to develop paediatric cardiac surgery in Iraq.

The successful outcome of the operation, as the hospital management represented by Ali Aleidani emphasized, is the result of months of preparation and staff training to ensure the sustainability of complex medical services.

This achievement strengthens confidence in the national healthcare system and opens new horizons for international partnerships in high-precision specialties.
