The Ministry of Transportation has stated that the Civil Aviation Authority of Greece has requested to operate direct flights from Athens to Baghdad.
This comes amidst discussions between the head of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, Bangen Rekani, and the Greek Ambassador to Iraq, Geogios Almanos, to increase co-operation and enhance economic and touristic relations between the two countries. Air Mediterranean and Aegean Airlines are two of the Greek airlines due to start operations on this route from December.
After the implementation of almost 30 development projects, Baghdad International Airport has seen massive improvements in the quality of its services. This has resulted in several visits from civil aviation authorities from around the world, to confirm the airport’s preparedness, and observation of international standards. The spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation, Maitham Al-Safi, has expressed that the airport “will witness a significant opening to the world” in 2026.
These developments are part of a broader plan by the Ministry of Transportation, to open up Iraqi aviation tourism to a European and international market, and represent the start of more collaborative initiatives, connecting Iraq to the wider world.
