Baghdad Parks Offer Cool Summer Escape

As summer temperatures climb in Baghdad, many residents are turning to the city’s parks to escape the intense heat. Families, young people, and groups of friends are spending their evenings outdoors, making the most of the green spaces that offer shade, fresh air, and a break from the sweltering weather.

Parks such as Al-Zawraa, Abu Nuwas, Al-Umma, the gardens along Al-Rubaie Street, and Al-Karkh Martyrs Park have become popular gathering spots. As the sun begins to set and the heat starts to ease, these spaces fill with visitors looking for a place to relax, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors.

In some parks, fine mist sprays from sprinkler systems hidden high in the trees, creating a light haze that cools the air and adds a refreshing touch to the atmosphere. Though subtle, this mist offers relief from the heat and makes the experience more comfortable for those walking or sitting beneath the trees.

The park experience is often made more enjoyable by food vendors selling simple local snacks. Grilled corn, cotton candy, shamia (a traditional sweet), and chilled drinks are commonly found, offering both flavour and refreshment.

With Baghdad facing long, hot summers, these green spaces have become more than just recreational areas, they’re essential public places where people can find comfort, connect with others, and enjoy a moment of peace away from the heat of the city.
