Baghdad Opens New Elevated U-Turns to Reduce Traffic

Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani has officially opened two new elevated U-turn overpasses on 14th of July Street in Baghdad’s Karkh district, aiming to ease the city’s heavy traffic congestion.

The project is part of the Tobji-Shaljiyah Interchange Development and was supervised by the Ministry of Construction and Housing’s Roads and Bridges Directorate. The first overpass heads towards Alawi and is 950 metres long, while the second leads to Aden Square, measuring 550 metres. Together, they connect 14th of July Street to the busy Ibn Hayyan Bridge, which has long been a major traffic hotspot.

“This is one of 16 projects launched by the Ministry of Construction and Housing to reduce traffic in Baghdad,” the Prime Minister said, adding that 11 of these have already been completed. The Prime Minister highlighted that the government is working hard across many sectors including infrastructure, sanitation, water, housing, and urban development, not just in Baghdad but throughout Iraq.

The new U-turns will improve traffic flow between key districts such as Adhamiyah, Mansour, Alawi, and Aden Square, making daily commutes smoother for many residents. This project reflects the government’s wider commitment to improving infrastructure and public services across the country.
