Baghdad Nears Completion of First Phase of Ring Road IV

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has announced the near completion of the first phase of Baghdad’s traffic decongestion projects, which will culminate in the development of Ring Road IV, a major infrastructure initiative designed to ease chronic traffic congestion in the Iraqi capital.

The announcement came as the Prime Minister inaugurated the first phase of the Abu Nuwas Street Expansion Project on Monday evening. The project forms part of a broader plan to modernise Baghdad’s transport infrastructure under the government’s “Baghdad More Beautiful” initiative.

Al-Sudani praised the engineers, technical teams, and consulting firms involved, acknowledging their success in completing the works under challenging conditions in one of Baghdad’s most densely populated and historically significant areas, adjacent to the Tigris River.

The first phase included the construction of a parallel road beneath the Suspension Bridge, extending for two kilometres, while the total project route spans eight kilometres  linking Abu Nuwas Street from Al-Karrada Martyrs Park to Al-Nusour Square in Karkh District.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the ongoing traffic projects across Baghdad reflect the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility, reducing travel time, and enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal.

Once fully completed, the Ring Road IV network is expected to provide alternative routes around central Baghdad, helping to ease congestion, improve connectivity between key districts, and support the city’s long-term urban development goals.
