Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani on Sunday reviewed progress on the Baghdad Metro Project, one of Iraq’s largest strategic transportation initiatives. The meeting included Baghdad’s Mayor, Iraq Development Fund officials, advisers, foreign companies interested in consortiums, and local private sector representatives.
Consultants Oliver Wyman and SYSTRA USA presented the updated master plan and economic vision for the project. The Prime Minister emphasised that the metro is key to improving urban mobility, easing traffic congestion, and supporting economic growth in the capital.
The metro will connect newly developed residential areas, including Bismayah, Al-Jawahiri, and Al-Ward, providing hundreds of thousands of residents with efficient access to central Baghdad. Al-Sudani noted that previous proposals were rejected for technical and financial reasons, and the government is now evaluating suitable international and local partners for implementation.
The project will cover 148 kilometres, featuring seven lines and 64 stations. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and selecting reputable companies to ensure timely and efficient delivery. Once operational, the metro is expected to transform urban transport and boost economic and social development across Baghdad.
