In the northern regions of Iraq, lies the Kurdish town of Amedi, steeped in history and natural beauty. Located a few kilometres northeast of Duhok, and sitting at a 1,400 metre elevation, Amedi is an experience, not just a destination.

Despite its modest population of 8,000, Amedi was once the capital of the Bahdinan Emirate, a Kurdish principality that chose the mountain’s height for safety, strength, and a view of the world below. From the Assyrians, to the Ottomans, many ancient civilisations have left their mark here.

Beyond its historical significance, Amedi draws in both national and international tourists with its lush valleys and rugged mountains. It is a favourite for summer escapes, offering a relaxing contrast to the busy city life below.

As Iraq continues to grow its international tourism industry, places like Amedi work to showcase the diverse natural beauty and unique cultural history of Iraq.
