As part of ongoing field follow-ups for national development plans, Dr. Haider Mohammed Makiya, Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), conducted an inspection tour of the Al-Tayeb area in Maysan Governorate on 29–30 April 2025. The visit was aimed at reviewing the administrative and geological boundaries of the Al-Tayeb Multi-Service Economic City project: one of the flagship investment initiatives currently under development in southern Iraq.
Prior to the site tour, Dr. Makiya held a consultative meeting with several department directors in Maysan to address key obstacles impeding project implementation. Discussions focused on identifying practical solutions to accelerate progress and remove administrative or technical barriers.
During the visit, Maysan Governor Mr. Habib Dhaher Al-Fartousi welcomed Dr. Makiya and his delegation, commending the NIC for its active oversight and rigorous planning of the Al-Tayeb project. The governor highlighted the Commission’s effective coordination with international consultancy firm KBR, which is currently working on the project’s basic design, economic feasibility studies, and financial modelling.
The Al-Tayeb Multi-Service Economic City is envisioned as a transformative regional hub, spanning a wide range of sectors. Investment portfolios have been prepared for modern housing schemes, industrial zones, agricultural and commercial facilities, tourism development, and education sector projects. The plan also includes international free zones and comprehensive infrastructure, designed to support the integrated functionality of the city.
Once realised, the project is expected to create substantial job opportunities and incentivise economic diversification and development in Maysan Governorate.
