Akkas Gas Field Begins Drilling Operations

Drilling operations have begun at the Akkas Al-Ghazi gas field in Anbar province, the Ministry of Petroleum said. Marking a key step in boosting domestic gas production and reducing reliance on imports.

The ministry said the project is being implemented by the Central Oil Company in cooperation with Schlumberger, the US based oilfield services company.

Akkas is one of Iraq’s largest gas fields. The first phase of accelerated production has already begun, delivering 100 million cubic feet of gas per day, with further development planned to raise output to 400 million cubic feet per day in later phases.

The project is strategically important for meeting national energy needs, supplying gas fired power plants, and supporting the electricity grid. Gas from the field will also be used to fuel the Akkas power plant, helping stabilise electricity supply in the region.
