The 2024 Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road gathered representatives from countries involved in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to foster media collaboration and exchange insights on how the BRI shapes global infrastructure and economic development.
Iraqi media outlets, including IINA, participated to emphasise Iraq’s role in the initiative and explore ways the media can effectively highlight the benefits of BRI projects within the country. The discussions focused on improving communication to showcase the infrastructure and development projects funded by Chinese investments, such as roads, energy facilities, and schools, which are playing a pivotal role in Iraq’s post-conflict transformation.
With China being Iraq’s largest trading partner, the forum stressed the need for accurate and balanced reporting on the BRI’s impact, particularly in supporting Iraq’s reconstruction.
Iraqi media representatives also explored opportunities for training and technological cooperation with their Chinese counterparts, aiming to enhance digital media capabilities and expand content distribution, thereby elevating Iraq’s presence on international platforms within the BRI framework.
As Iraq is China’s third-largest oil exporter and China a major consumer, their economic ties naturally foster trade agreements. Chinese investments and technological advancements in Iraq could reduce Iraq’s dependency on foreign imports while maximising its strategic location and natural resources.
