Technical Deputy of the Baghdad Municipality, engineer Amar Musa Kazem, conducted a field inspection of the ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation project at the Salah al-Din Tunnel, which has suffered significant structural wear due to excessive vehicle load.
The inspection was held in the presence of the Baghdad Trustee for Technical Affairs, along with the general managers of the Projects Department and Mansour Municipality. The visit comes as part of intensified efforts by the Projects Department to restore full functionality to this vital traffic route located in the Karkh district.
Engineer Kazem confirmed that the rehabilitation work is progressing around the clock, with teams focused on critical repairs including: maintenance of expansion joints and installing traffic signage and road markings
The tunnel plays a key role in managing vehicle flow in a high-traffic area, and its temporary closure has led to increased congestion in adjacent roads. “The project is nearing completion,” Kazem stated, “and we expect to reopen the tunnel soon to relieve pressure on surrounding traffic routes.”
Officials emphasised the municipality’s commitment to infrastructure improvement, highlighting that addressing this heavily congested area will have immediate benefits for commuters in western Baghdad.
