The ministerial-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council began today, Tuesday, 13th May 2025, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as part of the preparatory sessions for the fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit.
The meeting commenced with a speech by the Minister of Economy and Trade of the Lebanese Republic, Mr. Amer Bisat, who served as President of the previous session of the Council. In his address, Minister Bisat highlighted key achievements during Lebanon’s presidency, underscoring the importance of continued joint Arab efforts in the face of current challenges. He announced the handover of the presidency to the Republic of Iraq, acknowledging Iraq’s pivotal support for Arab causes, particularly its assistance to Lebanon during critical times. He expressed confidence in Iraq’s ability to lead the Council competently over the next four years.
Taking over the presidency, Iraq’s Minister of Trade, Mr. Athir Dawood Salman, welcomed the participating Arab delegations to “Baghdad Peace” and commended Lebanon’s efforts during its term. He noted that the Arab nation is at a historic juncture that demands strengthened collective action and self-reliance to build a resilient, productive economy capable of overcoming challenges.
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, congratulated Iraq on assuming the presidency, expressing optimism about its leadership. He pointed out the rapid transformations within the Arab economy and the need to establish a unified vision to enhance regional cooperation and stabilise markets. Aboul Gheit emphasised that adopting a strategy of partnership and integration would enable Arab countries to achieve a stronger economic reality. He also highlighted Iraq’s positive developments and noted that the summit’s agenda would focus on economic and developmental priorities relevant to the region.
The Economic and Social Council meeting marks a significant step towards fostering Arab economic integration, with Iraq now at the helm of efforts to address pressing challenges and pursue development opportunities.
