The Chairman of Iraq’s Media and Communications Commission, Dr. Nouvel Aborghev, endorsed the Commission’s commitment to empowering women in the media during a high-level meeting with a delegation led by Dr. Nebras Al-Maamouri, President of the Iraqi Media Forum.
Held at the Commission’s headquarters in Baghdad, the meeting focused on strengthening women’s professional presence in national media and overcoming barriers to equal representation. Dr. Aborghev emphasised the fundamental role women play in shaping credible and responsible media narratives amid today’s challenges.
He called for the launch of impactful proposals that provide equal opportunities for women, including specialised training, fair representation in media leadership roles, and content that challenges gender stereotypes.
The two sides discussed creating a dedicated unit to monitor violations against journalists and ensure appropriate legal responses. They also proposed launching an annual award to recognise media content that highlights women’s roles and promotes their positive presence.
Dr. Aborghev expressed the Commission’s readiness to support training programmes on conflict sensitive journalism, digital media, and gender aware reporting. He urged media institutions to create content that presents a balanced and realistic portrayal of Iraqi women and their professional abilities.
Concluding the meeting, Dr. Aborghev praised the Iraqi Media Forum’s efforts, underscoring the importance of sustained collaboration between the two bodies to advance national media goals and support women as essential contributors to Iraq’s evolving media landscape
