Iraq and Turkey Agree to Double Power Line Capacity to 600 MW

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has signed a contract with Turkish company Alifrin to double the capacity of the Iraqi-Turkish power interconnection line from 300 to 600 megawatts (MW).

The agreement, signed in Nineveh Governorate, marks a significant step towards strengthening Iraq’s national grid. The first phase of the project will supply 300 MW through the Jazra-Kask 400kV line, with the full 600 MW capacity expected to be operational within a month.

The Ministry has completed all technical preparations, including substations and transmission lines, ensuring the project can proceed without delay.

The contract operates under a ‘Take and Pay’ system, allowing Iraq to pay only for the electricity it consumes, this promotes economic efficiency.

This project is expected to enhance electricity supply in northern regions and facilitate future integration of Iraq’s power network with the European energy grid via Turkey. It is part of the government’s wider programme to diversify energy sources and boost cooperation with neighbouring countries and the European Union.
