The Ancient Church of Al-Aqiser

Karbala (iina) – Karbala being the pilgrimage city of Muslims, also contains ancient heritage sites including one of the oldest churches in the Middle-East. Al-Aqiser church is situated in a desert area called Al-Qaseer. The ancient church dates back to the 50th century AD, meaning that Karbala is holds a holy symbol for centuries, before Islam was born.

Many Aramaic inscriptions are evident inside the church, the walls are built of mud and many tombs of priests and people of Christian religion are rested at the old church. This heritage site is very sacred for the Iraqi cultural heritage, which is why many Christians visit the site as sort of a pilgrimage and commemoration.
