In a concerted push to modernise Iraq’s digital infrastructure and enhance its technology investment landscape, Professor Dr. Haider Mohammed Makiya, Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), held a high-level meeting with Dr. Balasim Al-Janabi, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Hasani, Board Member, to explore joint cooperation on key digital infrastructure projects.
Central to the discussions was the advancement of the national fibre optic cable project and the establishment of modern data centres, both recognised as critical pillars for enabling Iraq’s digital transformation. These initiatives aim to upgrade the country’s communications and information systems, improve internet services for citizens and institutions, and lay the groundwork for a more robust digital economy.
Participants highlighted the urgent need to accelerate investment procedures in the communications sector and to create a favourable climate for international technology firms to invest and operate in Iraq. The development of such infrastructure is expected to play a transformative role in enhancing the performance of public services, particularly in the education, health, and economic sectors.
Dr. Makiya reaffirmed the NIC’s commitment to supporting national, strategic initiatives aligned with Iraq’s sustainable development goals. He also confirmed that the fibre optic and data centre projects will feature prominently among the investment opportunities presented at the upcoming Iraq Investment Forum.
This meeting forms part of a broader series of coordination efforts by the NIC, working closely with sectoral authorities to prepare for the forum and chart a path toward Iraq’s digital future.
