Iraqi Airspace Records a Surge in Air Traffic

The Iraqi Ministry of Transport’s General Company for Air Navigation Services announced on Saturday a groundbreaking record in the number of aircraft crossing Iraqi airspace.

According to the General Company for Air Navigation Services, the number of daily overflights has reached 700, marking a significant leap in both regional and global connectivity. This achievement reflects years of dedicated efforts to restore international confidence in Iraq’s aviation infrastructure.

Usually, the number of daily overflights through Iraqi airspace ranges between 300 and 350. However, improved air traffic management and enhanced service quality have made Iraq a preferred transit corridor for major international carriers, including Air France, due to its geographical advantages.

The increased reliability of Iraq’s air traffic management has offered better alternatives to traditional routes, particularly for European airlines seeking optimised flight paths to Asia and the Middle East.

This shift not only validates Iraq’s aviation capabilities but also generates significant revenue through overflight fees, providing a valuable economic boost beyond oil income.

The General Company for Air Navigation continues to implement modernisation plans in coordination with the International Civil Aviation Organization, aiming to upgrade take-off and landing systems across Iraqi airports and enhance the use of civilian airspace.
