Iraq-Oman Relations Deepen Ahead of Arab Summit

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, Mr. Fuad Hussein, concluded a high-level official visit to the Sultanate of Oman, where he met with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said and senior Omani officials to deepen bilateral relations and deliver an official invitation to the upcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad.

During his meeting at Al Barakah Palace, Mr. Hussein conveyed the greetings of Iraq’s President Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and extended a formal invitation to His Majesty the Sultan to attend the Arab Summit scheduled in Baghdad. He affirmed Iraq’s preparedness to host the summit, emphasising its importance in strengthening Arab unity amid current regional challenges.

His Majesty the Sultan welcomed the invitation and expressed appreciation for Iraq’s stability, seeing it as a foundation for enhancing mutual cooperation and investment. He also reaffirmed his invitation for the Iraqi Prime Minister to visit Oman, a gesture warmly welcomed by Baghdad.

Mr. Hussein emphasised the strategic depth of Iraqi-Omani relations, highlighting opportunities for joint ventures in energy, oil, and tourism. He also shared updates on Iraq’s security and economic development, particularly the government’s focus on gas investments and the landmark “Development Road Project,” through which Iraq seeks to position itself as a vital regional trade hub.

In a separate meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, the two sides discussed regional diplomacy, including Oman’s role in mediating US-Iran talks, and pledged continued coordination on international platforms. They also agreed to activate mechanisms to implement existing bilateral agreements and expand cooperation in areas such as security, culture, and infrastructure.

The visit marks a significant step in reinforcing Iraq-Oman relations and setting the stage for productive Arab cooperation.
