Iraq Enhances Air Safety with New Radar System in Northern Region

Iraq’s Ministry of Transport has announced the installation and successful trial operation of a modern radar system in the country’s northern airspace. The advanced radar, developed by French company Thales, has been installed at Mosul International Airport and marks a key step in Iraq’s efforts to modernise its civil aviation infrastructure.

According to a statement from the Ministry’s media office, the newly deployed radar features cutting-edge technology with built-in cyber protection capabilities, ensuring enhanced security and surveillance for northern Iraq’s skies.

The initiative comes in line with directives from the Minister of Transport, Professor Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, and is being spearheaded by the General Company for Air Navigation Services. A technical committee, along with the head of the radar division, oversaw the radar’s experimental launch.

Officials confirmed that the radar system significantly boosts Iraq’s air safety by providing broader and more accurate airspace coverage. It is also seen as part of the broader digital transformation currently underway in Iraq’s civil aviation sector, which has already led to improved operations at various airports across the country.

The installation of the radar comes as Mosul International Airport nears completion, with the facility expected to open to the public by June. The addition of this radar further prepares the airport for safe, efficient air traffic management ahead of its inauguration.
