The First Iraqi Medical Congress took place at the Novotel London West on the 14th and 15th June, bringing together more than 500 Iraqi medical professionals from across Iraq and the diaspora.
The congress, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the United Kingdom, was the largest gathering of this kind, outside of Iraq. Guests and speakers from various fields attended, from academics, doctors and official government representatives.

The two-day event offered a space for collaboration and important discussions, such as healthcare reform, changing medical perspectives and medical education.
One of the event’s most prominent guest speakers was Dr Mohammed Tahir, a British-Iraqi former NHS doctor who recently returned from Gaza, where he carried out life-saving medical procedures for those affected by the ongoing conflict. Other notable attendees included Dr Hani Musa Badr, representing the Iraqi Ministry of Health, and Dr Ariana Khals Jawad, Chairman of the Kurdistan Supreme Council for Medical Specialties.

The programme featured a range of panel discussions, scientific presentations and workshops across multiple fields, from surgery and oncology to public health and digital medicine. There were many conversations surrounding ways to strengthen ties between UK-based Iraqi professionals and institutions in Iraq, with a shared aim of rebuilding Iraq’s healthcare system.

This congress is truly a landmark event for the field of Iraqi medicine, as well as the presence of the Iraqi community in the UK. Iraqi excellence was celebrated on a global stage, and as conversations and collaborative efforts continue to grow, the event is predicted to drive long-term advancements in Iraqi medical care
