British Influencer Jay Palfrey on Iraq’s Hidden Beauty

Once the cradle of Mesopotamian civilisation, modern day Iraq often becomes an overlooked tourist destination in global narratives. Today, Iraq is steadily gaining recognition for its rich cultural history and warm hospitality.

Since his first visit in 2021, British travel influencer Jay Palfrey has returned to Iraq over ten times. Drawn not only by Iraq’s diverse heritage, but mostly by the kindness and sincerity of the local people.
Jay is on a mission to document his travels around the world, visiting uncommon or stigmatised places, and changing people’s perspectives in the process.

As someone from the UK, what were your initial impressions of Iraq before your visit, and how have they changed since your return?

“Growing up, much like many other youth across the world, my impressions of Iraq were centred around acts of war and conservatism. However, my eyes were opened to the reality of life in Iraq when I decided to travel to the country myself for the first time back in 2021, determined to create a first hand account of what life is truly like in the country. Iraq is a country filled with phenomenal hospitality, warm and kind hearted people and world changing culture and history. Since 2021, I have returned to the country over 10 times to keep developing my knowledge of this rich history and experience.”

What sparked your interest in Iraq? Why did you choose it as your travel destination?

“I am on a journey to change the perceptions of the world’s most misunderstood countries, and Iraq was on my path across the Middle East.”

Based on your expectations, did you do anything specific to prepare for the trip?

“I found the best guide, and prepared my mind to get rid of any preconceptions.”
Jay chose to travel with ‘The Iraqi Way’ tours company, run by Hussein, an “incredible, professional, and knowledgeable guide.”

What was a memory that left a lasting impact?

“Having travelled to Iraq now more than a dozen times, it’s hard to pinpoint one favourite moment from my trips – during every visit, I am overwhelmed with happiness in the country. The country has phenomenal history, culture and cuisine, but it’s the Iraqi people that make every day in the country a long lasting memory. It’s truly just a joy to be surrounded with never ending smiles and laughter.”

Do you have any regrets, or is there something you wish you had done while in Iraq but didn’t get the chance to?

“I did not eat more Kubbah when I had the chance!”

Kibbeh is a popular dish in the Middle East, with Levant and Turkish origins. Considered by some as the Middle East’s answer to dumplings, the dish consists of spiced ground meat wrapped in bulgur parcels. The Iraqi version however, is more commonly called kubbah. Iraqis alternate between potato, rice and bulgur to create the pockets which are then filled with ground meat, pine nuts and sultanas.
Jay’s personal recommendation for his favourite dish, “not only in Iraq, but the world”, is the kubbah soup from Kibbeh Al-Baghdadi restaurant.

Did you find it challenging to adapt to the Iraqi climate?

Despite his upbringing in the cooler British climate, Jay enjoyed the Iraqi heat. “I love the high temperatures as Iraq is a dry climate so I rarely sweat.” Jay says the summer temperatures rising above 53 degrees Celsius is where his limits may be tested.

Do you have any advice for tourists who may be considering a trip to Iraq?

“Go in with an open mind, try all the foods and be prepared to meet the kindest people you will ever meet.”

How do you see Iraq’s potential as a travel destination evolving and what role do you think travellers play in reshaping global perceptions of the country?

“Iraq has a huge potential as a travel destination – the rich history and culture paired with the hospitality will make this country a highlight that guests will never forget.

Travellers are reshaping the future of Iraq’s tourism and they are changing the perception of Iraq globally – slowly, but surely, with the help of bloggers connecting with their audiences of millions, Iraq is shaping up to become a tourist highlight globally.”
